Copyright is basically all about receiving credit and maintaining ownership.
The statement is that you cannot use anything you didn't make yourself.
This is true for out of school purposes and contests (unless you are using music that allow these privileges). However, for an academic reason/assignment, the law is not as strict. As long as credit is given it is fine.
